Compared with the glamour and engineering dexterity on display in a tour round one of Boeing's aircraft factories in Seattle, it is easy to see why Boeing Capital, its finance arm, located nearby in an anonymous blue-mirrored building, tends to get overlooked.
Yet financial dexterity and innovative financing structures to help fund aircraft purchases are as critical to Boeing's future as its innovations in aircraft design.
Indeed, this central role of BCC was reinforced last November when Boeing announced a shake-up of the division, shifting from a growth strategy of expanding the asset portfolio towards helping the commercial aircraft and defence business units.
"Our performance will be measured on how we help them," says Scott Scherer, general manager of aircraft financial services.
