The Serbian Ministry of Economy and Privatisation will organise the first international conference entitled Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises - New Opportunities for Serbia next week, as part of efforts to press ahead with implementation of its SME development strategy.
Reviving the economy and promoting private sector-led economic growth is high on the Serbian government's priority agenda. The SME sector is the driving force behind economic development of each European country, securing the bulk of jobs, the majority of economic growth and better living standards.
The government wants to make the SME sector one of the key driving forces behind Serbia's economic development, along with successful privatisation and inflow of foreign direct investment. Serbia currently has 270,000 SMEs and hopes to reach 400,000 by 2008.
