The bank has expanded its activity in areas including trade lines, commodity finance, guarantees, project-linked trade finance and emergency response facilities. The rating may support the bank’s access to international funding markets at a time when African and Caribbean economies are managing higher import costs, geopolitical risk and pressure on foreign exchange liquidity.Afreximbank has also been active in crisis-related trade support. Earlier this year it approved a US$10bn Gulf Crisis Response Programme designed to shield African and Caribbean economies, financial institutions and corporates from disruption linked to the Gulf conflict. The new S&P rating adds another layer of external validation as the bank seeks to scale its role in trade and development finance. Stronger market standing can help multilateral lenders mobilise more capital, syndicate risk and support banks that provide import and export finance to local companies. For borrowers, the practical issue is whether stronger institutional credit standing translates into greater availability of trade finance during periods of stress. That will be closely watched as energy, fertiliser and food supply risks continue to affect import-dependent economies. #Afreximbank#Africa#Caribbean#commodity finance#development finance#S&P Global Ratings#trade finance
