Roberto Stefan Foa

Director, Sephira Institute

Roberto Stefan Foa is Co-Founder of the Cambridge Centre for the Future of Democracy, which he launched in 2020 with David Runciman at the Bennett Institute for Public Policy. He is also a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Policy Institute, King’s College London, an elected member of the World Values Survey Executive Committee, and co-founder of the Sephira Institute, which builds high-frequency indicators of public opinion and macroeconomic conditions from harmonised surveys, search and satellite data.

His research examines how political risk, shifting public attitudes and geopolitical realignment reshape economic conditions, and how novel data can track those shifts closer to real time. He previously worked with the World Bank and the United Nations, and has led survey fieldwork in Russia, Rwanda, Indonesia and Bangladesh. He holds a BA from Oxford and a PhD from Harvard, and writes regularly for the Financial Times, the Wall Street Journal and Foreign Affairs.
