trade finance Tunisia 13-05-2025 UBCI joins Proparco’s trade finance programme In a significant move to bolster international trade in North Africa, Union Bancaire pour le Commerce et l’Industrie (UBCI) has become the first Tunisian bank to join the trade finance programme led by Proparco, the private sector arm of the French Development Agency (AFD). This strategic partnership is designed to enhance the bank’s ability to facilitate cross-border transactions and support Tunisia’s economic development. On May 12, UBCI and Proparco formalised their collaboration in Tunis with the signing of a €30m trade finance guarantee facility. The ceremony, graced by the presence of H.E. Anne Guéguen, Ambassador of France to Tunisia, served as a testament to the long-standing relationship between the two institutions. Through this partnership, UBCI gains access to an expanded network of international correspondent banks, enabling it to broaden its service offerings for clients and secure trade finance lines under increasingly challenging financial conditions. The agreement positions UBCI to offer stronger support to Tunisian businesses of all sizes—ranging from large corporations to SMEs and small enterprises—particularly those operating in key sectors such as agribusiness, manufacturing, and distribution. Mohamed Koubaa, CEO of UBCI, emphasized the importance of this alliance in driving economic progress. He highlighted that joining Proparco’s trade finance programme underscores UBCI’s dedication to backing Tunisia’s economy and facilitating the international growth of its business community. The partnership, he noted, equips the bank to better meet its clients’ trade financing needs, while reinforcing its role in advancing sustainable economic development in the country. Frédérique Masi, Proparco’s Regional Director for North Africa, echoed this sentiment, expressing her enthusiasm over strengthening ties with UBCI. She underlined the importance of this initiative in enabling local businesses to import vital goods, enhance value-added production, and contribute to the broader economic ecosystem, particularly in support of small and medium-sized enterprises. By joining Proparco’s network, UBCI solidifies its position as a key player in Tunisia’s trade finance landscape and takes a decisive step toward empowering its clients and promoting resilient economic growth. #French Development Agency#Proparco#UBCI#Union Bancaire pour le Commerce et l’Industrie
