The Peruvian banking regulator SBS is currently studying requests submitted by two local financial institutions interested in the factoring and leasing businesses, a representative from the SBS.
Juan Jose Marthans, head of the SBS, recently announced the possible entry of the two players during a presentation but did not reveal the names or any details about the companies, the spokesperson added.
The regulator is also reviewing two requests from foreign financial institutions for entry into the local banking sector. No names were given.
The Peruvian banking sector has seen a recent trend toward consolidation as the country's top four banks now control a 79.4% market share in terms of lending and 86% in deposits compared to 72% and 80% respectively in 2001. The number of banks has been reduced to 13 compared to 15 in 2001. -
