SMEs urge Karachi Port Trust to review new demurrage charges

The Union of Small & Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) in a meeting Tuesday has urged Karachi Port Trust (KPT) not to charge demurrage on cargo lying unshipped in shipping companies yards because the rent is paid by shipping companies according to the area of the yards allotted to them.

Zulfikar Thaver, convener UNISAME, has drawn the attention of the chairman of KPT that previously the trust charged Rs.650 per 20ft container wharfage and over time, and allowed 10 days free of demurrage.

Now they have increased the wharfage charge to Rs.700 and have waived the over time charges but they have imposed demurrage on the basis of shut out cargo not shipped on the vessel for which shipping bill was filed under the relevant Export General Manifest (EGM).
