SMEs take advantage of zero import tariff

Malaysian companies, especially small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), have started to take advantage of the zero import tariff on Hong Kong exports to China by moving some of their operations there.

Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office director Rex Chang said his office has received a lot of inquiries, especially from SMEs, on the zero tariff and how companies can benefit from it.

"Through our contacts we have found that Malaysian businessmen are very interested in the zero tariff. It is not just big companies but also SMEs," Chang told reporters in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

He said since the zero tariff was introduced, from January 1 this year, it accounts for about 90 per cent of Hong Kong's exports to China.
