SME Bank hopes to lend RM400m in first year


The small- and medium-sized enterprise bank, SME Bank, hopes to disburse RM400 million of loans in its first year of operations, its managing director Datuk Azmi Abdullah said. Officially opened yesterday, the new bank is expected to meet the Government's objectives to nurture and grow the business of local SMEs. Azmi said with the group's combined asset value of more than RM22 billion and a capital base of RM4 billion, SME Bank is prepared to meet the requirements of SMEs. SME Bank is the result of an eight-month rationalisation exercise between Bank Pembangunan & Infrastruktur Malaysia Bhd and Bank Industri & Teknologi Malaysia Bhd. Speaking to reporters after the official opening of the bank yesterday, Azmi said the group is currently finalising the fund-raising structure of the bank before year-end.Under Budget 2006, Bank Pembangunan Malaysia Bhd would
