SBA launches online SME database

The Barbados Small Business Association (SBA) is launching an online business information system (BIS) to keep track of the sector's economic data.

The BIS will act as an online marketplace where Barbados' small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can exchange information, find products and services and seek out new business partnerships. It will list information on all local SMEs registered with the SBA.

"If we are going to plan and develop the types of strategies we believe are vital to help the sector to move into this new liberalised environment, we must have data with which to do it," SBA president senator Sandra Husbands was reported as saying. Husbands hopes to use the new system to help track the country's SME revenues and the levels of employment and export they generate.

"All of these are critical elements of our information base which we need to be able to capture in a meaningful way," Husbands added.
