Premier vows to help SMEs to survive

Premier Yu Shyi-kun said that he will do his utmost to help small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to upgrade their production and management in order to survive ever-increasing competition in the global market.

Yu said that SMEs have contributed greatly to Taiwan's economic prosperity over the decades, noting that Taiwan has 1.1 million SMEs providing 7.36 million jobs.

"Even though we have large enterprises and high tech companies to serve as a locomotive in driving our economic development, we would have been unable to create an economic miracle if we did not have so many SMEs," Yu said.

Over the past three years, he said, the government has completed a number of reform projects in the economic and financial fields in order to create a better business and investment environment for local businessmen.
