Sarawak ranks high among other States in Malaysia that generated investments for the country last year with a contribution of 30 per cent of the country’s total investments. International Trade and Industry Minister Dato’ Seri Rafidah Aziz said last year, the State attracted investments worth RM8.567 billion from 32 manufacturing projects.
Of that, 12 are new projects while the remaining are expansion and diversification projects. In 2002, the State attracted investments amounting to RM476m. The largest project approved last year is the aluminium smelting plant in Bintulu involving a capital investment of RM7.9bn. “The project is expected to give spin-off effects to the local industries especially the small and medium enterprises,” said Rafidah, adding that the manufacturing projects were expected to create 4,291 job opportunities in the State.
