One North Carolina Fund money would help small business in Senate bill

Governor Mike Easley's "walking-around" money to boost corporate incentives deals would also be used to assist small businesses with high-tech ideas in a bill that passed the Senate on Tuesday.  The measure, which now goes to the House for consideration, would allow state officials to divert money from the One North Carolina Fund toward a new One North Carolina Small Business Fund.  Small businesses looking to expand with a new product or service could receive up to US$3,000 from the new fund to offset half the costs of filing a grant proposal seeking federal funds for small business research or technology development.  State funds also could be used for up to US$100,000 in matching funds for businesses that win these grants.  "This will again help our small businesses grow," said Senator Walter Dalton, D-Rutherford, the bill sponsor.
