Norway and Poland sign agreement on EEA funds


Norway and Poland have signed an agreement on how Norway's contributions towards the expansion of the EU shall be used in Poland.

Norway is not a member of the EU but, according to the European Economic Agreement (EEA), Norway will contribute large sums of financial aid to the new EU members.

Norway will have to pay NOK 10 billion (Ђ1.22bn) over five years in assistance to the new member countries.

The money will be used to reduce the social and economic differences within the EU community, the agreement states.

Poland, the largest of the new member countries, will get 49 per cent, NOK 2.3 billion (Ђ277.83m), over five years.

In return for its financial contributions, Norwegian exports and industry gains entrance to the EU markets.
