New 800m Bhat education fund aims to create 18,000 new SMEs

The Thai Industry Ministry has set aside a budget of 800 million baht over two fiscal years to meet the government's ambitious plan to create another 18,000 new entrepreneurs.

The Industrial Promotion Department (IPD) has already negotiated with a number of universities and organisations to seek potential sub-contractors, according to Pramode Vidtayasuk, the department's director-general. Participants include Chulalongkorn and Thammasat universities, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Federation of Thai Industries.

For 2005, the IPD expected to achieve its target of creating 8,000 new small-l and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with a 200-million-baht budget, he said. The remaining 600 million baht would be spent in 2006 to create another 10,000 new SMEs.
