Market Performance and Supply  In 2000 there were some interesting developments in the Argentine factoring industry. The fall in consumption already outlined led to a decrease in domestic transactions and most lending institutions suffered debt collection problems. As a consequence of an increase in defaults on loans, financial institutions imposed more rigorous credit standards, particularly for small and medium sized businesses. The federal government is sponsoring several policy proposals that are aimed at reversing this trend. Among them are a new factoring law and the statutory regulation of new credit.
