Economy Minister Jacek Piechota has announced that a second legislative package will be issued this year to promote small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
The large share of labour costs in corporate spending makes SMEs more susceptible to any increase in fiscal and labour charges than other type of companies.
The number of active SMEs fell from 1.719m in 2000 to 1.605m in 2001, and continues to fall.
Small and medium-sized companies have a 69.9 percent share in trade and services, 11.6 percent in construction, 12.5 percent in the production industry and 9 percent in transport and telecommunications. They are the main drivers of the Polish economy, with a 60-percent share in gross domestic product (GDP), and a 60.6 percent share in employment.
