ISME warns postal disruption will hit small business sector

The disruption to the postal services is already hitting small businesses hard and could result in redundancies within days, the independent business organisation ISME warned yesterday.

The threatened all-out postal strike would cost such companies between Ђ5m and Ђ10m a day, according to ISME's chief executive Mark Fielding.

About 20,000 small and medium-sized companies depend heavily on An Post for paying and receiving cheques and for sales and marketing campaigns, he said.

"Many people are running their businesses very, very tightly from the point of view of cash flow. Any delays in payments will have a negative impact on these companies and could result in lay-offs," he said.

The areas affected are: Dublin, Bray, Carrickmacross, Castleblaney, Drogheda, Dundalk,Kells, Tuam, Wicklow, Greystones and Galway.
