Banking Technology trade finance Working Capital Asia 28-09-2026HSBC launches AI Smart Checking for documentary trade across UK, Hong Kong and UAEHSBC has deployed an AI-powered document-checking system across its trade-finance operations in the UK, Hong Kong and United Arab Emirates, targeting one of the most labour-intensive stages of documentary trade in a business that processes more than one million documentary presentations each year.Smart Checking is designed to read, interpret and check trade documents using HSBC’s proprietary artificial intelligence alongside a reasoning engine and knowledge graph. The bank says the technology converts structured and unstructured information into searchable data before performing documentary credit checks, with confidence-based workflows determining when a case should be passed to a human trade specialist. The deployment is significant because the one-million-plus figure refers to HSBC’s annual documentary-trade operation, including documentary credits and collections, rather than a small technology pilot. Individual presentations can extend to hundreds of pages, while the conditions attached to documentary credits can vary substantially from one transaction to another. HSBC said a single presentation can currently take hours to process. The bank has not said that Smart Checking is already processing all of those one million presentations. It is currently in use in three markets, with a broader global production rollout planned over time. HSBC has also not disclosed the proportion of documents being processed without intervention, the reduction in average checking time or a quantified cost saving. That qualification is important in assessing the working-capital impact. Faster checking of compliant documents can shorten the interval between presentation and payment under documentary trade instruments, which in turn can release cash to exporters sooner. HSBC says this can improve certainty and allow businesses earlier access to liquidity, but it has not published performance data showing the amount of time currently being saved. The system also illustrates a different direction for AI adoption in trade finance from generic customer-service applications. It is being placed directly inside a controlled documentary workflow where discrepancies, compliance conditions and contractual requirements can determine whether payment is released.Human review remains part of the process. HSBC says its trade specialists helped design and test the system and determine how exceptions should be presented, while confidence-based controls decide where automated processing is appropriate. #artificial intelligence#documentary trade#Hong Kong#HSBC#Letters of Credit#Smart Checking#trade documents#trade finance#UAE#working capital
