Government loan support for SMEs

The Small Business Guarantee and Finance Corp. (SB Corp.), the lending arm of the Department of Trade and Industry for small and medium-sized companies, provides much needed financial support to encourage the birth and development of small- to medium-size enterprises (SMEs).

Amelia Alonzo, chair and CEO of SB Corp., says that SME centres are established all over the country for the program to reach even entrepreneurs in the provinces.

"Our country's population of about 80 million represents a huge market. If we provide all the help to SMEs, they will be the engine of our turnaround," says Alonzo.

According to statistics from the DTI, 99.6 per cent of enterprises in the Philippines are SMEs. Figures also show that SMEs provide 70 per cent of the country's employment.
