Exports up again in July


Hong Kong's exports in July rose 16.5% year-on-year to HK$ 183.6 bn, after an 18.2% growth in June, the government said

Re-exports were up 18.3% year-on-year at HK$171.9 bn in July, while domestic exports fell 4.1% to HK$11.7 bn

"Merchandise exports stayed on a strong uptrend in July 2004. Exports to East Asia as a whole remained vibrant, led mainly by a sustained surge in exports to mainland China, Japan, Singapore and the Republic of Korea," said a government spokesman.

Apart from strong exports to Asia, exports to the EU and the US also recorded growth

Meanwhile, imports increased 18.4% year-on-year to HK$189.3 bn in July, after a rise of 21.5% in June

Hong Kong posted a visible trade deficit of HK$5.6 bn in July, equivalent to 3.0% of the value of imports for the month. The July trade deficit was larger than the HK$2.3 bn recorded in the same period last year
