Evergreen expands electronic bills of lading through WiseTech’s Bolero Galileo

Evergreen Line has expanded access to its electronic bills of lading beyond its own customer network, allowing a broader group of freight forwarders, shippers, consignees, logistics providers and financial institutions to handle Evergreen eBLs through WiseTech Global’s Bolero Galileo platform.

The move extends a relationship between Evergreen and Bolero that has operated for more than seven years. The shipping group has already used Bolero technology to provide electronic bills of lading within its own network, so today’s development is an expansion of distribution and interoperability rather than Evergreen’s first adoption of the digital document.

Through Galileo, users connected to WiseTech’s CargoWise and INTTRA ecosystems can request and access Evergreen eBLs within existing workflows. The platform manages the exchange and lifecycle of electronic bills and related trade-finance documents as cargo moves between counterparties.

That linkage matters because a bill of lading is not simply a shipping record. Depending on its form, it can function as evidence of receipt, a contract-of-carriage document and a document controlling rights to goods. Delays in transferring or checking it can therefore slow cargo release, document presentation and financing processes.

The expanded connection is based on the Digital Container Shipping Association’s API v3.0 standards, intended to support interoperability between carriers and trade platforms. WiseTech said the arrangement should reduce manual administration and make documents more readily available across the connected network.

No transaction volumes, adoption targets or financing values have been disclosed, and the announcement does not mean that trade-finance banks automatically accept every electronic document generated through Galileo. Legal recognition, bank procedures and the requirements of individual transactions still apply.

The development is nonetheless significant because adoption is moving beyond bilateral digitisation inside a carrier’s own portal. Making Evergreen eBLs accessible to existing CargoWise, INTTRA and Galileo users increases the number of trade participants that can use the electronic document without building a separate connection to the shipping line.

For trade finance, that is the more important measure of digitisation: whether electronic documents can move across the operational networks already used by carriers, logistics companies, cargo owners and banks.
