EU to Support SMEs in Poland

The EU Programme for Promotion of Entrepreneurship (PfE) will enable thousands of Poles to set up their own businesses. They could receive ZL20,000 initially and a ZL700 monthly grant to last for up to a year.

"There haven't been such big sums allotted to help set up private businesses in Poland's modern history," says Michal Boni, the former labour minister.

Under the PfE programme, Poland was granted ZL250m. More than 10,000 Poles may benefit from it. The funds will be distributed without any age or education limits and potential candidates don't have to be unemployed. A good business idea is the only applicable criterion, with the transport sector the only area excluded from the programme due to the EU's protectionist policy. The new businessmen will be advised on how to run a small company by the institutions which will act as intermediaries responsible for spending the EU funds.
