EU accession could prove fatal for many SMEs

Government trade agency CzechTrade, Deloitte & Touche (D&T) and consultancy Adwise have unveiled a new programme designed to provide exporters with know-how and practical help in reaching new markets.

The programme is primarily aimed at helping small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and is one of a growing number of programmes being launched in the countdown to EU accession, now less than eight months away.

According to figures cited by Adwise partner Erik Dianis from a joint survey compiled by GfK and DHL in March, almost 26 per cent of Czech exporters who had lost business on foreign markets in the past three years blamed it on fierce competition. Some 17 per cent blamed internal problems in their companies, which illustrates the extent of the problem, Dianis said.
