Dramatic rise in small business optimism

Further evidence of the improved atmosphere for small firms is revealed in a survey by the Bank of Scotland (BoS).

According to the survey, the number of small business owners confident about future trading conditions has climbed 47 per cent since February.

Meanwhile, 80 per cent of owners now expect business to improve, or at least stay the same, over the next 12 months, a 44 per cent rise on 10 months ago.

The survey adds to now concrete evidence that SMEs are enjoying a better time of things.

Last week, a survey by NatWest bank showed that small business sales output climbed 15 per cent this quarter on the July to September period. (See UK in Depth – 11 December 2003)

An earlier report by financial services firm Begbies Traynor hinted that small firms were enjoying improved output because bosses were prepared to splash out more on Christmas celebrations.
