Draft Policy on SMEs a Welcome Development

The Secretary for Industry and International Trade, Mr Stuart Comberbach, has announced that the draft policy on small and medium-scale enterprises is almost ready and will be brought before Cabinet for approval over the next few weeks.

Zimbabwe has been operating without clear guidelines on the SMEs for a long time, hence the implementation is expected to re-ignite activity within this important segment of the economy.

The economy needs a framework under which the indigenisation concept can be put into proper perspective and effectively implemented. Undoubtedly, the growth of the SME sector is the panacea to Zimbabwe's current economic woes.

However, their full potential can only be realised if the operational environment, to be determined by the policy, is conducive to growth. A cohesive and coherent policy could produce amazing results as experiences in countries such as South Africa have shown.
