Crippling budget cuts at Danish Export Council

The Danish Export Council is bracing itself for crippling cutbacks, despite the success of its export pushes abroad, according to the newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

The Danish Export Council is set for yet another round of punishing government budget cuts, despite the fact that the council's work has helped to increase Danish exports by billions of kroner, and created thousands of new jobs.

A dramatic wave of retrenchments at the Foreign Ministry will require the Danish Export Council to slash its activities by an additional DKK17m (Ђ2.28m), according to an internal ministry budget memo.

Since 2001, the Export Council has weathered cuts in funding in excess of DKK50m (Ђ6.70m), despite several independent analyses, which have revealed that the increase in exports in 2002 directly attributable to the council's work totalled at least DKK3bn (Ђ400m).
