Chilean Banks Wary of Lending Funds to SMEs


Chilean banks have used just 7% of a US$500million government-sponsored loan guarantee for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) debt restructuring because of the high risk they see in many of the indebted SMEs. The loan guarantee is available to the banks until end-December. Chile's economy minister Jorge Rodriguez said the government would not put up more funds for SME reprogramming because of the economy's poor performance.
