Business investment declines but is expected to rise again


Polish companies' aggregate investment levels continued to decline in the first six months of 2003, dropping 2.2% to PLN 21.8 bn, but the official Central Statistical Office (GUS) underscored that the situation is improving and investment could rise in the last six months of the year.

Private sector companies managed to increase their share in total investments to 76.1% in the first half of 2003 from 72% in the first half of the previous year. A full 51% of private-sector investment was in industrial processing (46% a year earlier).

Polish companies began 24,700 investments in the first half, a total up 31% year on year. The total value of investments begun in the half amounted to PLN 13.4 bn.
