Business fears over email invoicing wide of the mark

A new European directive does not require small businesses to send and receive invoices by email, despite fears that firms would be forced online by the new laws, according to a business software company.

Intuit Ltd said that there had been “widespread misinterpretation” of the EU Directive on Invoicing, which outlines how firms can send payment demands to clients and customers.

Stephen Lee, managing director of Inuit, said that businesses have been misled over reports that they will have to use electronic invoices rather than the traditional paper method.

“Over recent months some of the media has been wrongly declaring that companies must now accept invoices by email according to a new European directive.

“I have been alarmed at the undue concern this misunderstanding is causing my customers and other small businesses in the UK.
