Better Payment Practice Group responds to Experian research and says late payment, not longer credit periods, hamper business

The Better Payment Practice Group (BPPG) welcomes any new research into credit management issues. We would however like to comment on the Experian press release (4 August) and associated comments concerning the late payment legislation.

The Experian research focused on the number of days it takes firms to pay their bills. This is not a measure of late payment but a reflection of the length of credit periods agreed between customer and supplier. It is uncertainty about being paid that causes most problems for businesses, not necessarily the length of the credit period.

The BPPG, through its member, Credit Management Research Centre, monitors overdue payment days, as a measurement of how firms are being affected.
