Astra foundation to increase SME assistance

Astra International's Dharma Bhakti Astra Foundation (YDBA) will provide Rp20bn (US$2.3m) in technical assistance to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the handicraft and automotive and motorcycle sectors next year.

Astra is the sole distributor of Toyota vehicles as well as Honda Motorcycles through its subsidiary Honda Astra Motor.

The foundation's executive board chairman, Krisni Murti, said on Monday that the amount was higher than this year's figure of "between Rp10bn (US$1.15m) and Rp15bn (US$1.72m)".

SMEs producing handicrafts will receive 60% of the funds with the remainder going to those producing or supplying car and motorcycle components. Krisni explained that the foundation's handicraft SME partners sell most of their products for export.
