The lira has firmed over 10 percent against the dollar since the start of the year. It traded at some 1,400,000 on Friday (8 August, 2003). As a result of the appreciation of Turkish lira against the dollar, exporters are suffering losses.
Holding a press conference following the Economic Problems Assessment Board's meeting at the Trade Ministry, Ali Coskun said that the government was determined not to intervene in exchange rates to avoid creating artificial crises.
"We are carrying out serious work toward reducing the input costs in order to solve the problems of exporters on the exchange rate issue," Coskun said.
Stressing that they are trying to provide new opportunities and incentives on oil, electricity, social insurance premiums and tax issues, Coskun noted that they aim to increase the competition.
