Mexico's electronic commerce association, Amece, predicts it will be at least five or six years before the majority of businesses use electronic invoices.
"Widespread adoption will be seen in about six or seven years provided that the tax office (SAT) makes it obligatory, but for smaller firms it will not be easy," said Amece manager Jannet Leon.
Small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will have the toughest time integrating the technology because of their difficulty in acquiring it, according to Leon.
The SAT published its rules governing e-invoicing in late May, giving companies a guide to modifying their systems and processes. The office proposed a format, based on XML, that will mean companies handling only certain pieces of financial information in the e-invoices.
